Hello Brent!
You are a great and genuine musician. You are one of the most important members on IE history. With your performance on "Alive In Athens" we have become your fans, with Framing Armageddon our admiration for you is increased. We were lucky to have more information about you during the Wicked Tour Part I&II Road Rage Reports. At last, we are thankful that you gave us a chance of interview and we are going on or questions.

Thank you for your kind words and admiration. It was my pleasure to do the Road Rage reports for the last tour and it is my honor to do this interview for you.
--------------------------------
At the beginning we decided that we must know you better. Not with the band just about you. What is the "opinion of world" of Brent as a Heavy Metal Man?  Can you tell us your story of starting to play drums and your story of joining Iced Earth?

My opinion of the world is that it is at once peaceful, calm, and beautiful, and at the same time can be tragic and devastating. I believe we are living in a very pivotal time in Mankind's history. Our future lies in our hands and will be shaped by the decisions we make.

I started playing music at the age of 7. I took piano lessons for about a half a year and then discovered my true calling the drums. I began taking lessons from my next door neighbor, a man by the name of John Weldon. He was a disabled Vietnam Veteran. I studied with him for a little while sometimes taking 3 lessons a week. After him I studied with the late great Master Drum Teacher Jimmy Glenn Sr. He encouraged me to play in school band, so my last four years of High School I played in Concert, Symphonic, Marching, and Jazz Bands as well as Percussion Ensemble. I studied Drums and Percussion briefly in college before beginning my career as a Heavy Metal Drummer.

My story of joining Iced Earth is a rather interesting tale. I was playing my brother in our band Oracle at the time, we had signed a small deal with a German record label. I was doing a lot of the promotion and PR work myself at the time and had come in contact with a man by the name of Steve Woodham. I only ever spoke to him on the phone and still have never met him to this day. He was a big Iced Earth fan and spoke to Jon once and only once and asked Jon if there was anything he could do to help the band. Jon told him they needed a drummer and Steve gave him my number. Here is where the story gets intriguing... A few weeks before I got the call to come audition I had sent away to Century Media for a catalog and had received one of their sampler CDs. It had the Iced Earth tune "Last December" on it. It has a really cool intro and I liked it so much that I put it on my answering machine. So when Jon called I had his song on my answering machine. I will never forget that message. It seemed like fate and destiny. The rest is as they say history...
---------------------------
As you know every fan wants to know something special about their favorite bands and members. For example, West Ham admiration of Steve Harris, Lars Ulrich's NWOBHM and Tennis, Lemmy's Lyrics and sight of life. And Jon's Prophecies Smile What are your hobbies out of Heavy Metal?

My hobbies outside of Music include spending time with my wife and family and friends.I enjoy bike riding, nature hikes, and I am an ace Ping Pong player. I am also very intersted in the solar sytem, stars, planets, and science fiction.
---------------------------
Now we are up to Iced Earth questions. You have left a problematical period. Some fans are glad that Matt is back. Do you think that Tim's Departure and Matt's Return happened as it must? We wonder your opinion on it.

As far as the switch from Tim back to Matt... I feel that Tim Owens is a totally awesome and amazing singer, but the majority of fans feel that Matt Barlow is the true voice of Iced Earth. So due to this I believe it is a change that was bound to happen evetually. My opinion is that it is sad to see Tim go but great to have Matt back.
---------------------------
Do you believe that there will be a lack of harmony in the Something Wicked Part II as a result of Tim's departure? Is it possible to record the FA again with Matt? What can you tell us about the upcoming album on 2008?

I do not think there will be a lack of harmony on Something Wicked part 2 due to Matt's return as Matt and Tim have similar styles. It should make for an intersting conclusion to the story.I am unsure at this time if FA will be re-recorded with Matt. As for the forthcoming album, I can tell you that it looks like it will be the best Iced Earth album so far, another metal masterpiece and the conclusion of an incredible story. It will be heavily advertised and promoted, and there will be some touring as well.
---------------------------
Is it possible that you to make a DVD during the records of Something Wicked Part II, and use it on the DVD that Jon told good news about, our writing another diary about the making of album just like Road Rage Reports on the Wicked Tour?

Yes there are plans for a new DVD, but it will most likely be a live DVD from the tours for Something Wicked part 2. There should also be more Road rage reports in the future, written by yours truly.
---------------------------
All the fans worry about that Matt is still a Lawman. Does it bother you on the recordings or the rehearsals? 'Cause band will be on a Tour. Won't Matt's Job make any problem on the shows out of your country? Do you have any idea about it?

No it does not bother me that Matt is a lawman. It will make scheduling a little bit trickier for the touring, but I believe it will work out just fine. Things are already being scheduled as we speak.
---------------------------
One of the thing we most wonder, you joined the band for three times and departed the band two times. Can you tell us the reasons of leaving the band? Did you leave the band for personal problems or problems inside the band? You were called back for two times, it means that you are too important for Iced Earth? What do you think about it?

My reasons for leaving the band in the past were personal. I was having a hard time and not living the healthiest life. I came back when I thought I was healed, but it was too soon and things ended worse the 2nd time. I do feel I am very important part of Iced Earth and I am grateful to be able to rejoin the band for a 3rd time to set things right so to speak.
---------------------------
This is certain that Jon is a hard man. You are a old member that succeeded many big things on the history of band. We wonder Jon's behaviour against you. Can you tell us about it?

Jon has always treated me with respect and dignity. He can be very demanding at times, but he never askes for anything more than he himself is willing to give. He has a very high standard and has built a great reputation for Iced Earth so it only makes sense that he would hold any and all members and associattes of the band to the highest level of performance.
---------------------------
You showed an unbelieveable performance on "Alive In Athens". We see your unexpected rythms and attacks. You have a very different style. You are like a mix of great drummers. We want to know if you have any influences? Can you tell us what do you feel about them and their technics?

Thank you for your compliments on the "Alive in Athens" CD and DVD. Those were wonderful and magical shows that seemed to
capture the intensity and emotion of Iced Earth. I have many influences that have helped shaped my style. My all time favorite is Dean Castronova. Some of my other favorites are Bill Ward, Scott Rockenfield, Nicko McBrain, Gene Hoglan, and Mitch Mitchell. I have found something unique and interesting in each one of these drummers. I have tried to study them and take the best parts of each and infuse it into my own style.
---------------------------
Looking to Iced Earth history we see "The Glorious Burden" an album full with nationalism. It's the most sensationel album of IE. Does nationalism still have effects on the band? What the band members think about it? What do you think about IE to show their nationalism to the fans and the rumors about that Matt Left the band cause of this album?

I too like "The Glorius Burden" very much. Even though I did not play on this album it is one of my favorite Iced Earth records. I would say that all of us in the band are very patriotic.I think it is a good thing to expose the fans to our feelings of nationalism. Matt did not leave the band due to what the record was about, but due to the fact that it was his time to leave. It seems that things have come full circle now.

---------------------------
We see the great shows of the Iced Earth, completeness between members, and the songs which were played much better than records. In this meaning Which IE song is the one you most like to play that you can either show your technics and your spirit?

Thank you for your kind words about the live show. Iced Earth has always been a band which prides itself on giving the fans the
very best performance every nite, every city, and every show.It is hard to pick just one favorite song to play live, but a few of my favorite are "Violate" because of the extreme nature of the song and the blistering double bass, "The Coming Curse" because of it's agressiveness, "Pure Evil" because it is such a good song, and "I Died for You" for it's moving and deep emotional nature.
---------------------------
Framing Armageddon is a masterpiece from beginning to the end. Which one is the best song on this album? Why? What do you think about Ripper's role on this album?

I agree that "Framing Armageddon" is a metal masterpiece. I would have to say my favorite song of the album is "The Clouding" because it is such a departure for Iced Earth and shows the other end of the spectrum than most of our songs. I think that Tim did an excellent job on the record.
---------------------------
We experienced it before (interview with Ripper) Members of band -Out of Jon- don't talk about the projects much. As a special member for IE we think you can tell us. We wonder that What kind of plans does IE have for future? Does IE have?

Iced Earth's plans for the future are to finish and release Something Wicked Part 2, to tour in support of this record, to make a live DVD in the near future, and to continue to play our music and spread our message of Metal to the masses. All the while maintaining the highest standards of quality and craftmanship in the recordings and live performances.I have spent the better part of my life practicing and perfecting my craft at playing drums, especially Heavy Metal. Thanks for noticing.
---------------------------
You are an ideal drummer for a Heavy-Power Metal band. Does Jon have special requests on the songs? Or are you the  "Just Ruler" of the drums?

Jon usually has very definite ideas for the drums in all the songs. Although I am allowed to put my style and input in to some degree. Jon has the final say on any and all things Iced Earth.
---------------------------
We have heard about a compilation will be released under the name of “Slave To The Dark – The Century Media Years”. Is it real? If it is real, it seems impossible to remaster and remix all the songs in this busy times of IE. What can you tell us about it?

I do believe there are plans for a Century Media compilation. I do not know much about it at this time. I'm sure the time would be made to remix and remaster it if and when it is to happen.
---------------------------
All the IE fans wonder if the story will last after the RA. In the second album, the song "Something Wicked Part III" made us wonder much more. Do you have anything to tell about it? Will story go on?

As far as the Something Wicked story continuing on after this next record, only time will tell. It is definitely a story that could be expanded upon in many ways.
---------------------------

And the last question... There is still an indefineteness about the Tour after RA's release because of Matt's job. Can we have hopes of IE to come Turkey? We know it's too early to comment about, but is there any possibility that you to come here?

As far as the touring after the release of the next record, there will definitely be some touring. At this point things are already being arranged and scheduled, but I am unable to give you much more information about it at this time. There is always the chance of playing new territories in the future, Turkey being one of those. We will have to see, time will tell. I hope that we do make it to Turkey one day soon, as I have never been there and always look forward to spreading our music to new fans and meeting new people and seeing new countries.
---------------------------
Thank you for agreeing our interview request on the IE's most active period. Regards to the all band members.

You are most welcome for the interview, it has been my pleasure. To all our fans in Turkey, thank you for your support and love of
Heavy Metal.I hope that we can bring Iced Earth to your country in the nearfuture.

METAL LIVES

BRENT E. SMEDLEY

IcedEarth Turkey has nice interviews with IE. I've read 'Tim Owens Interview' before, if I can find its English version, I'll put it to forum.

I'm sure after touring. the band is going to take a break while Jon records a new CD for Demons & Wizards, with a live album after that, he mentioned it a few years ago saying he had to get a "few projects" out of the way first, perhaps Part 1, Part 2, and the DVD? Yes sir me thinks so!

Both D&W albums had a couple of filler tracks scattered around the albums but the songs that were good, were damn good! So I want another D&W album, later next year would be a good time!
