Biggest Disappointment of the Year: Iced Earth - TCOM - 411

Dan Haggerty wrote:
OK album, but it just didn't resonate with me. Color me underwhelmed after the massive hype around this "Something Wicked" two album concept project, having neither the bombast a power metal album of this level should have and sadly lacking the epic feel of a story so big it took to albums tell. I'll stick to the original trilogy of songs - Now there was an album that rocked. This has nothing to do with the singer drama either (although Schaffer needs a foot put up his ass for the way he handled that), as Barlow does a good job with what he was given. Despite six extra months to "rework" the album it still doesn't sound like it was written to accommodate the man. Besides, it's the riff work that sinks things. Schaffer has a good lead guitarist. He needs to let him start writing, because it's obvious he's been cannibalizing his own catalog. Not a bad album, just average, and certainly disappointing after all the hype.

This stupid fucking fucker fuck. I came across this 411 Music Presents…2008 Year In Review: Part 1.2 - Staff Picks, Vol. 2 while using Songbird, and it told me Iced Earth was in a recent news article, so I checked it out, and this mother fucker picked IE as the worst album of the fucking year. The bastard...

The Wicked One

Not every1 will like what we like. That being said I hope the guy gets sodomized by something with spikes or thorns of some sort.
Dante

he'll burn.
NightCrawler

What a fag Mad

I've read a great amount of bad reviews about TCOM, and I honestly don't understand why so many hate it.
Perhaps it is not true, grim, frostbitten or black enough Razz
The Sexiest Metalhead

Yes, it was a dissipointment, but it's definately not the worst album of the yea. This douche was overreacting.
paranoidmexican

big deal. i was disapointed with TCOM
DantesInferno

He's entitled to his opinion just like we are....But TCOM wasn't all that great...wasn't bad either
Feanės

well fuck him, I don't care about what he says, and Schaffer does not either....

Hey, you sound like good old Jon Wink...

Anyway.... Crucible of Man surely ain´t the best album but I wouldn´t call it a disappointment. It´s a good record that I enjoy listening to, nothing less and nothing more.

I actually quite liked TCOM. It concluded the story very nicely, the return of Barlow was amazing, Jon's riffs were phenomenal as ever and  I think it deserved every bit of hype it got. A Gift or a Curse, Crucify the King and Come What May are among my favorite Iced Earth songs of all time. Especially Crucify the King.

I loved TCOM as well, but it still felt like something was missing. It needed a conclusion like The Coming Curse, even tho Come What May is a really good ending The Coming Curse just had all this power behind it.
Ahmed

The song Something Wicked Part 3 fills the role of The Coming Curse.
Kanadwen

SWP3 is really bland tho, it's just one rift throughout the whole song. TCC had a nice piano intro, followed by normal singing, then a chorus, then a nice rift, then a new rift, into chanting, back into a new rift, then back to the beginning of the song. BTW, Jon's new version of TCC in Overture of the Wicked was REALLY horrible. I did like the new drums though.
Feanės

I don't really like SWP3 that much, there could have been much more made out from it...
SnakeBite

I´m not a huge fan of Something Wicked Part 3 either. Fo me it´s the worst song on Crucible.
Besides that, as I said before, I really enjoy the record, the only other thing that bothers me is that there should have been a few more faster songs on the record.
Ahmed

I have to disagree here, I love that song. And it DOES remind me of The Coming Curse. There is not a single song on that album I dislike.
Schulle

that song rocks - cmon !!!
Feanės

I respect your oppinion about it, don't get me wrong, I also love TCOM, but for me, SWP3 is the weakest song on the album, and only becuause of the one riff from the SW trilogy, it reminds of the coming corse, cause its the same riff, but that doesn't makes the song any better, I don't think it is bad or shit, but it is not as great to me as the other songs on the album.

Exactly, it has no fucking BALLS behind it man! 98 The Coming Curse = BALLS 08 SWP3 = no BALLS

...wtf why balls? I dunno. Razz
The Wicked One

I think you are too busy focusing on these 'balls' XD.

Anyway I can see why some of it seemed bland.

The most appealing part of the album was the time gap between his birth and becoming the set that would have been in the coming curse era. Set as a child and his adolescence were portrayed well, as well as the open ending of Come What May.

Thats what to me made Framing Armageddon so great. The gap between the Prophecy an the Birth could be endlessly explored and adapted to Jon's will.

I just felt that Sacrificial Kingdoms and Something Wicked Part III were leaching too much from the Coming Curse song.

Divide and Devour is one of them too but I enjoy the song too much.

Someone with an opinion that differs from some of those on the forum....  Shocked No way!

But all in all, TCOM does kind of suck balls after a while. I'd have to agree that it was a pretty hefty let down. Not saying that it was the "worst" album of the year, but it definitely wasn't close to being the best.

guess i add my 2 pennies.....i like TCOM, but its not the best iced earth album. i guess the reason is, i dont think the album was aggressive enough for me....musically. i mean, heres a album about the friggin anti-christ, and it just seemed a little...restrained to me. so i guess i was just let down a little. but NO WAY is it a bad album.

You die now!

Nah just kidding, I wouldn't kill a fellow IE Fan.
What I meant about sounding like Slayer is, to not hold back on
the lyrics and the energy.
Like Night of the Stormrider, it is (imo) the best Iced Earth album (to date)
It's just feels so much more energetic.

However Iced Earth is a band that you have to see live to really appreciate
if we get to hear those songs live they'll probably grow on us.
Iced Earth never lacks energy when they play live!

absolutely true
ManOfShadows

TCOM is by far not the best album, but there were aspect of the album that were more appealing than others.
