Metallica "Death Magnetic" Clipping Distortion

So Metallica's new album is under controversy right now, not because of their covered material, but actually HOW they covered it.
Apparently, the master release of the album is totally different than the Guitar Hero release, which on Guitar Hero, the track sounds perfectally normal, unlike the master track which sounds distorted and "loud". In link below, Shepherd blames the "Loudness Wars," which have engineers sacrificing audio quality in favor of a louder-sounding final product.

What do you guys think of this?

Well, if it has something to do with Metallica, then I don't really care about it.

Ya know, you really should give them another chance.

This isn't just Metallica, it's all new material being released. I'd like to compare copies of The Crucible of Man with the Something Wicked Box Set, see if there is a difference.

Metallica Death Magnetic - CD vs. "Guitar Hero" comparison

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRyIACDCc1I

^ Make sure you watch it in High Quaility to really tell the difference.

Ted Jensen, head engineer at Sterling Sound, who mastered the album, allegedly responded to fan concerns, writing "Iĺm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."

Wonderful. Expect our next IE album to sound like shit, unless if it's, *GULP* released on GUITAR HERO!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The Sexiest Metalhead

I'm not sure it'll be released on guritar queer-o. There not that big.

Yet...

Jon has already addressed the loudness issue in interviews and inside the I Walk Among You single:

"This is a dynamic metal record! Play It loud!!! (We refuse to ruin our production by compressing the hell out of it so that it's mastered at ridiculous voulumes! That kills the vibe and dynamics of the mix. Just turn it up on your stereo!)"

I do remember that, but in the end, it's not up to Jon I believe. I sure hope it is though.

I did listen to St. Anger. I didn't like it as much as their other works, but I did like it.

Death Magnetic > St. Anger

I can only admit that, don't always remind yourself of St.Anger, Metallica did a lot of good stuff too!

?????    Confused

Dude are ya on drugs? your writing is a little bit weird...

GH version does sound better. In any case. If you want the same sound buy the vinyl unless they just digitally pressed it which basically means its another fuckup.

I buy Vinyl for 2 reasons
1. Collectable
2. The quality in sound

I've always hated Lars Ulrich, he is again opening his fat ass mouth about something he has no idea of which he is ranting about.

A lot of people say [the CD] sounds great, and a few people say it doesn't, and that's OK. You gotta remember, when we put out ...And Justice for All, people were going, 'What happened to these guys, this record? There's no bass on it. It sounds like it was recorded in a fuckin' garage on an eight-track.' And now ...And Justice for All is sort of the seminal Metallica record that supposedly influenced a whole generation of death-metal bands. The difference between back then and now is the Internet.

The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice. Listen, I can't keep up with this shit. Part of being in Metallica is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing: 'James Hetfield had something for breakfast that I don't like.' That's part of the ride.

What a FUCKING moron!

I don't really like buying vinyls cause they don't sound as good as cd's or even cassettes. I mean I would rather hear a clear sound than a bunch of popping and hissing (which I get even from clean lp's and turntable needles). I never understood why folks think that is better sound. But if you do more power to ya!

As for collectible, I use to collect every thing Tallica (even named one of my now deceased dogs after them), lp's, pic discs, demos, bootlegs you name it I had them all, and this was back before the internet (80's - 90's, didn't get to even look at internet till like 2000) even the very hard to find bootlegs (on lp) The Unstoppable Force and We'll Nail You Down. But I was stupid enough to give them all away (yes give not sell, and stupid because they were kick ass) when Re Load came out. Load started the Tallica Hate from me than Re Load continued it and St Anger was the final nail in the coffin. But just because those albums sucked (sans one or two actually good songs on those albums) didn't mean the older stuff started sucking because of them. That was my stupid idiotic attitude about it so I lost a lot of highly collectible stuff. I am a moron! Please bite my head off for that I deserve it! (Or don't ) Very Happy

then you have the following.
bad speakers.
bad needle
uncalibrated turntable
your vinyls must not be that clean or you have the needle lighter than i do.....

I have.
Old Paper speakers
a professional turntable
remotely calibrated (bulb brunt out)
a brand new needle.
Some really clean vynil.

The sound is better even with the occasional pop or hiss. believe me on since i usually have both the cd and vinyl

Let me correct myself. First yes I do have clean lp's, not a mark or dust speck on most of them, I have one of those needle cleaning brush things, so needle is clean. Speakers are good. By correcting myself I mean that it is not ALWAYS pops and hiss, it is seldom, on some lp's very few. What I meant is I don't even like the occasional pops and hiss. The way I wrote it sounds as if I have nothing but pops and hiss. It's been like that since I was a kid, I never liked it then (pops and hisses), so I know it's not that I am desensitized by modern cd's and whatnot, cause I grew up on lp's, then moved on to 8tracks, cassettes and now cd's. Plus I only have an old turntable it doesn't even have any connections on it (no rca jacks and what not, they weren't invented yet I don't think when I got the turntable) the only connections are for the speakers, don't even have a cassette player on it!! So you are right I may be wrong on the speakers being good, but some of the other lp's don't have much pops like I said, some are very few. But oh well guess I'm just too picky.

One good thing about lp's is bigger artwork to admire. And the older lp's that were on both lp and cass, often had lyrics on the sleeve where the cassettes usually didn't, but that was long ago, I haven't gotten a new lp since the Thornographic Disc was sold in Hot Topic (I never took it out of it's sleeve to even listen to it), and haven't had one before that since Metallica's 45 singles from And Justice For All (One and Eye Of The Beholder. I think they had one for Shortest Straw too, but I never got that one).
The Wicked One

i'm lucky on the speakers. they are my parents'.

I had that discussion in the german blind guardian forum too;

well if you think ulrich is an asshole......you are completely right, he is. I will not say something against that. But I still like him  Wink

what he wants to say is, that no matter what, people will always find something to critizise.

But his way to say things is often very bad and gives the people the feeling that he's an asshole. And actually beside me and my friends, NO ONE likes Lars Ulrich.

Just don't know why.....he's only human

Hehe, my main grudge against him is Napster. He was being a whiney bitch imo. But yes, I do agree with what hes saying, at least someone will bitch about something of the new albums. The difference is...the evidence is there! It's like buying a DVD movie, but it coming in VHS format, get what I'm saying?
