Original Iced Earth CD re recorded on Days of Purgatory

They basically did all but one song on Days Of Purgatory, even the instrumentals were included. My question is.. is there in existence a demo or other recording of the only song from the self titled album that did not get on Purgatory? That song in question is Curse The Sky. I was going to make my own "comp" of the Barlow vocaled self title lp taking the songs off of Purgatory. But that is the only song that is missing that would make it complete. Anyone know about this? Hell I will even put on a live version if it's not "bootleg" quality. If I find one that is.
FYI: IE fans already know that the song "Cast In Stone" is "Written On The Walls" only with Barlow lyrics and I am sure you know the story of that rewrite. I am putting it on my comp cause it is the same music just different lyrics. That is if I can find a Barlow or even John Greeley or Ripper version, live or otherwise of the "Curse The Sky" song.

Actually, I hate to admit, I don't know the story of the re-write. I despise Cast in Stone but love Written on the Walls. Anyone care to elaborate?

Basically, Gene Adam wrote the lyrics to Written On The Walls to Schaffer's music. To avoid royalty issues they just had Barlow write lyrics instead. Though it is the same music, just remixed or re recorded or something. They just didn't want to pay Gene any money for the lyrics.
Yes it is true "Written On The Walls" lyrics are a hell of lot better than Barlow's "Cast In Stone" lyrics. Just thought I'd throw that in.

On a different note, does anyone know the story of "Winter Nights"? It is on the Purgatory album but not on their demos (at least the demos I know of) or the albums prior to Purgatory. Is it a new recording only available on that album?
The Wicked One

I don't have the 1st album so i didn't know about the Written on The Walls-Cast In Stone thing.

Well for right now I do like Cast In Stone.

I downloaded To Curse the Sky a while back when I heard that IE was out of print and liked it. Another singers version would be nice.

Now what I am wondering is what about John Greely doing live stuff off the 1st album. ne1 know about that?
Stormrider

I know they played several shows with Greely and he sang songs off the first album (I have one horrible sounding bootleg of a Greely show with one or two IE songs, the recording is so horrible I never listened to it in it's entirety). Yes it would be cool of good to soundboard to pro recordings of Greely live surfaced somewhere.
I still haven't been able to find info on the original topic nor info on Winter Nights. I still think WN is a Purgatory exclusive song but I don't know. I bought the digipak version of Purgatory used and it had no booklet so I don't know if anything about that song is in the booklet or not. Oh well.

I only have the 1 disc edition of Days of Purgatory where the back of the case has an incorrect song listing.

Other than that the intro of it is basically a well written Fuck Posers speech.
Its too bad that well probably never hear Greely do an IE song ever.
Hes on a powertrip right now since Ripper was asked to leave IE to have Barlow in again.

I should have said "HAD" the bootleg. I no longer have it (it was in my computer and I deleted it). I am sure there are other Greely boots maybe some good ones out somewhere.

I've wondered about Winter Nights too. It was notably performed at the Wuppertal 91 show, which i would like to hear, however, the person who had it on their blog a couple of months ago removed it before i could hear it. Otherwise i would make an audio rip, remaster the sound, extract the vocals, and attempt to dub them over the DOP version.

Even if we didn't know it dated back to that time, it's obvious just from the Greely vocal styles emulated by Barlow, which are the same thrash grunt and soaring falsetto that Greely uses on the likes of Mystical End and Pure Evil. My guess is that it's a song that was removed from Stormrider for one of three reasons:

1. Did not fit with Stormrider, musically or lyrically, or contradicted another song's lyrics.
2. The band hated it (that "Don't give up, don't give in" section sounds like one of those 80s power ballad things).
3.Too hard to sing live (unlikely)
4.The band did not want it to become a favourite that they would have to perform live, so they abandoned it (combination of the above).

It was a wasted opportunity not including the song on the "Night Of The Stormrider" Slave To The Dark remaster.

Regarding the other songs, I have heard both The Path I Choose (on AIA), and To Curse The Sky performed live with Barlow. The only song I have not heard is Mystical End, which despite being a song which everyone loves, is not performed live anymore because it's one of the earliest Stormrider songs and does not fit in with their current style. However, it's on the Wuppertal bootleg, which again i want to hear. Confusingly, it's intro Before The Vision was remade on Purgatory. Maybe, Greely wrote the lyrics to the song. I have no idea though.
The Wicked One

i think it would more towards option 1.

I believe that Jon would not hide a song from his fans if he knew it would be a classic.

i think 2 is also bogus. if i wrote anything, id want it edited and sculpted to be something i could really like.

5th reason in collaboration with option 1. They could not afford to put on so many tracks, so they took it off.

There are only 9 songs on the album, so that seems a stupid reason.  More likely than that, the length of Travel In Stygian, Desert Rain and Pure Evil meant that wouldn't fit.

However, i've assembled an iTunes playlist containing the original album and the rerecorded Winter Nights and IMO it fits really well between Mystical End and Pure Evil.
The Wicked One

like i said it was probably a matter of money.
