Thanks!

Good news everyone.

I've discovered three more Purgatory items, which i will share with you all.

The first is a live version of Burning Oasis

http://www.sendspace.com/file/exi4qm

The second is a live version of In Jason's Mind

http://www.sendspace.com/file/30wo4e

The third, and most cool is a later studio recording of Dracula from 1988. It originally appeared on an obscure Tampa cassette compilation.  It is the first recording released officially as Iced Earth, and is a better version of the song on the Purgatory Horror Show demo tape.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/n33t2f

And an appropriate picture to finish off, this is a flyer for the 1988 Sunset Club show to inform people of the name change.

Enjoy.

Well, Purgatory do sound a lot like Slayer in general. It was only with the Enter The Realm demo that the band found their unique sound.

BTW, I just got Days of Purgatory today. Surprised that nobody has brought this up, but it appears that the backing track of Winter Nights is not an outtake from the first album/Stormrider sessions but actually an outtake from the first Purgatory demo. It still remains unknown whether this was Burning Oasis or Psychotic Dreams, but either way, this places it squarely in the Purgatory era. This means that someone needs to find (or bootleg) the 1986 studio demo of Winter Nights. Could be the hardest to find known item in the Iced Earth canon.  But it's something to look for.  Very Happy

They played Winter Nights in Wuppertal '91. So it's definitely before NotS. And he says that it is a "new" song so it's probably not from '86 either!

Actually, there are a few Purgatory bootlegs which feature songs from NOTS. Of course these would have been introduced as new songs during the 1991 tour. Greely's comment that the band 'pretty much had all the songs there' when he came to the studio means that they may well have been demoed prior to his arrival in the band. It's not unusual for this to happen, look at what happened in Megadeth. Mustaine held over four songs from the pre-Killing Is My Business era and recorded them for third album So Far, So Good, So What.

When you see the amount of unknown songs on Purgatory setlists e.g. this one:

http://mattbarlow.imageworks.dk/the_sunset_club.htm

You can see why a song like Winter Nights might not have been released or played live often, with that many songs.

Besides, the Days Of Purgatory booklet says next to Winter Nights:

"Reworked from our first 24 track studio session at Morrisound in 1986"

I know Schaffer likes to rewrite history but i'm sure if he says that it's true.

I'm looking for that Purgatory Sunset Club bootleg. There are no traders with it who have provided their email addresses, which is frustrating. If anyone has it, or any others, please share. It would be most appreciated.

Lol. I can't listen to the Barlow version of Desert Rain without being reminded of Tenacious D's 'Tribute', ever since my dad pointed it out to me.

Well i got those three Purgatory bootlegs in the Media section. Totally awesome. Hearing the original version of 1776 made me wonder this. Anyone else think that the studio version of 1776 is a Days Of Purgatory outtake? It has a different production from the rest of SWTWC plus it was played during the previous album's tour. It's just something i was wondering.

I'm thinking of contacting Greely and asking for any more information on the demos he has from his IE period. Not sure i have the nerve at the moment but it seems he's quite friendly from other people's experiences.
